Arsenal defeated Manchester City to win the Community Shield by winning the penalty shootout 4-1 after a 1-1 draw after extra time. This is the Gunners’ 17th Community Shield win overall and their second under Arteta. Additionally, Arsenal are selling Matt Turner and replacing him with David Raya from Brentford. Let’s discuss all of this news.
Arsenal Summer Business Part 8: Arsenal Beat Manchester City to Win the Community Shield
Arsenal faced off with Manchester City in the Community Shield and won, scoring a late equalizer to take the game to extra time. After that, the Gunners won the penalty shootout 4-1. Fabio Vieira scored the winning penalty for Arsenal to claim the Community Shield trophy.
The Community Shield is a relatively minor trophy. However, both teams clearly played to win. This win is a good psychological boost for Arsenal, since they have not beaten Man City too often in recent years. Additionally, Arsenal can learn from this victory, specifically from how they neutralized Erling Haaland.
This is a good way to start the new season.
Matt Turner Will Almost Certainly Leave Arsenal to Join Nottingham Forest
Matt Turner has been linked with a move to Nottingham Forest for a while now and it seems likely that this transfer will happen. Turner did not play much for Arsenal last season. Turner obviously wants to remain the USMNT’s starting goalkeeper, so it is understandable why he would want a transfer to get more playing time.
Additionally, with Arsenal’s pursuit of David Raya, Turner would be relegated to being the club’s third-choice goalkeeper in the men’s senior team. The reported fee the Gunners will receive for Turner is roughly 10 million pounds. This is a fair fee and this transfer makes sense for both Arsenal and Turner.
Arsenal Summer Business Part 8: David Raya Looks Increasingly Likely to Join Arsenal
Arsenal has pursued David Raya for some time and the deal could reportedly be completed soon. Raya is reportedly quite eager to join Arsenal. The Gunners will pay about 30 million pounds in addition to potential future add-ons to acquire David Raya from Brentford.
This is a high fee for a backup goalkeeper. However, Raya is a starting-caliber goalkeeper and will provide Ramsdale with healthy competition. Arsenal will soon have exceptional depth at goalkeeper with both Raya and Ramsdale in their team.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles Has Left Arsenal to Join Lyon
Ainsley Maitland-Niles hasn’t played for Arsenal very often in the past few years. Now, Maitland-Niles has left Arsenal on a permanent transfer to join Ligue 1 side Lyon. This is a good move for the Gunners and Maitland-Niles.
Maitland-Niles will certainly play much more often for Lyon. This move reunites Maitland-Niles with his former Arsenal teammate Alexandre Lacazette. Hopefully, Maitland-Niles does well at his new club.
Arsenal Will Likely Finalize Selling Turner and Buying Raya Soon
The Gunners will likely finish the sale of Matt Turner to Nottingham Forest and the purchase of David Raya from Brentford soon. This is an upgrade for Arsenal at goalkeeper, although Turner is a capable goalkeeper. I would bet that Ramsdale will remain the Gunners’ starting goalkeeper, though.
