The Heat acquire Giannis in blockbuster trade. That is not a sentence one would have thought possible the last time we covered the Heat in an article. However, it has now happened. Let’s break this down and discuss this massive move and its impact on the Miami Heat.
Heat Acquire Giannis in Blockbuster Trade | A Long Pursuit Ends
The Heat have long held an interest in acquiring Giannis. This dates back to the 2020 off-season, following a season in which the Heat were two wins away from a championship. It seemed possible that the Heat could sign him in free agency. However, Giannis signed a contract extension with the Bucks. He did so again in 2023.
The relationship between Giannis and the Bucks broke down in the next few years. Giannis ultimately prioritized winning another championship over remaining with the Bucks. This blockbuster trade is the end of a long pursuit. Pat Riley and the Heat’s front office should feel extremely pleased that they completed this deal. The Heat wanted a superstar, and they now have one once again.
Did the Heat Give Up Too Much?
The Heat provided significant assets in exchange for Giannis, as expected. Milwaukee received Jaime Jaquez, Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, and Kasparas Jakucionis in addition to four draft picks. The Heat received Giannis and Bobby Portis. It makes sense to question whether or not the Heat gave up too much for Giannis, especially considering that Giannis is 31 years old and has struggled with injuries in recent years.
However, Giannis is still one of the five best players in the NBA when healthy. He is a two-time MVP and a former Finals MVP, as well. Keeping one of Kel’el Ware or Jakucionis would have been ideal. While the Heat may have given up a little too much, it could very well be worth the risk. Time will tell.
How Does Giannis Fit with the Heat?
It’s also important to consider how Giannis fits with the Heat. Giannis is most effective on offense when surrounded by shooters who ensure that the opposing defense cannot easily double-team him without paying the price. The Heat have some good three-point shooters, such as Tim Hardaway Jr., Davion Mitchell, Andrew Wiggins, Pelle Larson, and even now Bam Adebayo.
However, it could some adjustment to make the offense work optimally with Adebayo and Giannis in the frontcourt. They both prefer to operate in or near the point. Adebayo doesn’t fit as well with Giannis on offense as Brook Lopez did in Milwaukee. Despite this, Giannis will drastically improve the Heat’s transition offense and his gravity will create better looks for the Heat’s shooters.
Defensively, Giannis fits extremely well with the Heat. Adebayo and Giannis appear likely to be one of the NBA’s best frontcourts on defense. They have size, strength, length, and can guard multiple positions. The Heat should be one of the best defensive teams in the NBA next season, since they have other elite defenders to compliment Adebayo and Giannis such as Davion Mitchell and Andrew Wiggins.

It’s fair to say the Heat may have given up too much for Giannis. However, the Heat needed to make a major move this offseason and they acquired a legitimate superstar. The Eastern Conference appears wide-open, and the Heat have positioned themselves as well as they can so far to take advantage. Bobby Portis is also a valuable complementary player in this trade. Overall, the Heat receive a B+ grade for this trade.
The Heat Will Continue to Build Around Giannis This Summer
