It has been over thirty years since the English Premier League was created in 1992. During that time, there have been quite a few interesting statistics recorded. Without further ado, let’s discuss 10 fascinating EPL soccer statistics.
EPL Soccer Statistics: Most Premier League Points in a Season: 100
Even among teams that win the English Premier League title, 80-90 points is roughly the average amount of points that they accrue over the course of the 38-match season. Manchester City won the Premier League last season with 89 points. However, one team in Premier League history reached the 100-point mark.
Manchester City accomplished this in the 2017-18 Premier League campaign, earning 100 points en route to winning the league title. Also, they finished 19 points above their city rivals Manchester United. Additionally, Manchester City had an absurd +79 goal difference in that season. No team has replicated that utter dominance since then.
Fewest Points in a Premier League Season: 11
On the other end of the spectrum, there have been some truly awful Premier League teams. No team compares to the hopeless 2007-08 Derby County team, though. Derby finished that season with a measly 11 points and were rooted to the bottom of the league table all season long.
Additionally, Derby only won a single game all season long, a 1-0 home win against Newcastle United. A few particular lowlights include a 4-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur, 5-0 loss to Arsenal, and 5-0 loss to West Ham United. Derby County finished 25 points from safety.
Highest Attendance at a Premier League Match: 83,222
Premier League games regularly have high attendances. This is no surprise, given the popularity of the English Premier League. However, one game stands above the rest as the Premier League match with the highest-ever attendance.
83,222 fans traveled to Wembley Stadium to watch Arsenal play Tottenham Hotspur on February 10th, 2018. Additionally, Wembley hosted the North London Derby match because Tottenham’s new stadium wasn’t ready for use yet. Tottenham won the match 1-0 courtesy of a Harry Kane goal.
EPL Soccer Statistics: Lowest Attendance at a Premier League Match: 3,039
It is unusual to see low attendances at English Premier League matches these days. In the inaugural Premier League season, the 1992-93 season, one match is notable for its extremely low attendance. Only 3,039 fans showed up at Selhurst Park to watch Wimbledon play Everton on January 26th, 1993. Everton won the match 3-1.
EPL Soccer Statistics: Most Goals in a Premier League Game: 11
These days, there are at least a few Premier League games per season with many goals. However, the Premier League match with the most goals happened in 2007. Portsmouth hosted Reading at Fratton Park on September 29th, 2007. Portsmouth put the ball in the back of the net seven times as they won 7-4. No Premier League match has included 11 goals since then.
Latest Goal Scored in a Premier League Match: 102 Minutes, Eight Seconds
Unlike some of the other statistics, this is extremely recent. The latest goal ever scored in a Premier League match was scored at 102 minutes, eight seconds played. Oliver McBurnie converted a penalty for Sheffield United as they drew 2-2 with West Ham United at Bramall Lane. This took place on January 21st, 2024, as part of the 2023-24 Premier League season.
Fastest Goal Scored in a Premier League Match: 7.69 Seconds
Some Premier League teams have scored extremely early goals in matches. Shane Long scored the fastest-ever goal in the Premier League, putting Southampton ahead against Watford 7.69 seconds after the match had started. This is an astonishingly quick goal and scoring faster than that will prove incredibly difficult.
Most Goals Conceded in a Premier League Season
The three teams that are relegated from the Premier League each season tend to be the same teams that concede the most goals in the league that season. This is a trend for an obvious reason. Weaker teams concede more goals.
However, Sheffield United have the undesirable distinction of conceding the most goals in a Premier League season. In the current 2023-24 season, Sheffield United broke the record for most goals conceded by conceding 101 goals. Unsurprisingly, Sheffield United have already been relegated and will finish at the bottom of the league.
Fewest Goals Conceded in a Premier League Season
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Premier League has seen some outstanding defensive teams over the years. Chelsea have the record for fewest goals conceded in a Premier League season. The Blues only conceded 15 goals across the entire 2004-05 Premier League season. This was a major factor in Chelsea winning the 2004-05 Premier League title.
Most Own Goals Conceded in a Premier League Season
Own goals are embarrassing for whichever teams concedes them. Leicester City have the record for most own goals conceded in a Premier League season, conceding eight own goals in the 2003-04 season. As one might expect, Leicester City finished 18th in the league that season and were relegated to the Championship.
