The Heat have been in offseason mode for a while at this point. It is clear that the Miami Heat need to make a significant move in order to elevate themselves into legitimate contender status. The Heat’s offensive performance in their season-ending Game 5 loss against the Celtics in the first round was proof of that.
There are a number of players the Heat could pursue. Donovan Mitchell is one of them. Without further ado, let’s discuss the Heat pursuing a trade for Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell.
Heat 2024 Offseason Part 3: Why Can’t the Heat Sign Donovan Mitchell in 2025 Free Agency?
Unless Donovan Mitchell re-signs with the Cleveland Cavaliers and continues wearing a Cavaliers jersey, he will be a free agent in the 2025 offseason. Considering that, one might wonder why the Heat would attempt to trade for Mitchell now instead of signing him in 2025 free agency. There is a simple answer to this.
The Heat will most likely not have the cap space to sign Donovan Mitchell outright in 2025 free agency. Jimmy Butler’s contract is one of the main reasons why this is the case. As it currently stands, the Heat will likely not have significant cap space until the 2026 offseason.
Signing Donovan Mitchell in 2025 free agency isn’t a viable option for the Heat.
What Can the Heat Trade for Donovan Mitchell?
It is a near certainty that the Heat would include Tyler Herro in any trade for Donovan Mitchell. Herro and Mitchell have similar games, but Mitchell is clearly better than Herro. Additionally, the Cavaliers would likely want Herro to replace at least some of Mitchell’s offensive production.
Aside from that, the Heat can trade their 2030 first-round draft pick. The Heat could also include Jaime Jaquez or Nikola Jovic, although they would likely hesitate to do so. Other teams interested in trading for Donovan Mitchell do have more draft picks to trade.
However, Mitchell has leverage as a 2025 free agent. He can and likely will threaten not to re-sign with a team that trades for him if it is not one of his preferred teams. The Miami Heat are reportedly one of Mitchell’s preferred teams. We will see what happens, but that is good news for the Heat.
Would Donovan Mitchell Elevate the Heat to Contender Status?
It is important to consider how much Donovan Mitchell would improve the Heat. Mitchell averaged 26.6 points, 6.1 assists, and 5.1 rebounds while shooting 46.2% from the field and 36.8% from three-point range in the 2023-24 NBA regular season. The Heat only averaged 110.1 points per game in the 2023-24 NBA regular season.
This means that the Heat ranked 26th in points per game. Mitchell would breathe new life into the Heat’s stagnant offense. He is an explosive scorer with athleticism, three-point shooting, and excellent finishing around the basket. His playmaking is also impactful.
With Mitchell on the team, the Heat would have a new offensive focal point. This would likely elevate the Heat to contender status. Given the fact that the Heat finished as the third-best defensive team in the NBA last season, they would have little trouble covering for Mitchell’s defensive deficiencies.
Heat 2024 Offseason Part 3: Donovan Mitchell Would Fit Well on the Heat
The Heat are a great fit for Donovan Mitchell. Additionally, Mitchell reportedly has the Heat on his list of preferred teams if he is traded. Hopefully, the Heat can acquire Mitchell and revitalize their offense.
