Now that the 2024 NBA Finals are over, the NBA offseason has officially begun. The latest reports have stated that the Heat are considering trading for a top-five pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. This is surprising, since the 2024 draft class isn’t projected to be great. Without further ado, let’s discuss the possibility of the Heat trading for a top-five pick in this year’s NBA Draft.
Heat 2024 Offseason Part 5: Why Make This Trade?
First, it is important to consider why the Heat might make this trade in the first place. As previously stated, few people expect the 2024 NBA Draft to be league-altering. In fact, there is still no consensus about who the Atlanta Hawks should draft with the first overall pick. A defensive-minded player makes sense for them considering that they have been bad defensively ever since they drafted Trae Young.
For the Heat, there are two reasons why they would want to trade into the top five of this draft. The Heat might just want a prospect that another team might draft in the top five. However, the Heat might also want a top-five pick so that they can use that pick in a future trade. Given the Heat’s first-round exit in the 2024 playoffs, the latter reason seems a bit more likely.
Who Could the Heat Draft If They Trade for a Top-Five Pick and Keep the Pick?
The Heat were an elite defensive team in the 2023-24 NBA regular season. Despite this, the team’s offense was often stagnant, especially when either Jaime Jaquez or Tyler Herro were unavailable. Considering this, G League Ignite forward Matas Buzelis fits well on the Heat if the team acquires a top-five pick. Buzelis would add playmaking and shooting to a Heat team that could use more of both.
Heat 2024 Offseason Part 5: Is This Trade Worth It for the Heat?
It is surprising that the Heat might want to trade up in the 2024 draft. However, whether or not it is worth doing so depends on how much the Heat have to give up to do so. If the asking price for a top-five pick is too high, the Heat should stay at #15 in the 2024 draft.
Isaiah Collier, a guard from USC, is one possible pick for the Heat. Collier could become the Heat’s offensive engine for many years if he fulfills his potential. The Heat would ensure that Collier improves his jump shot so that he becomes a versatile offensive player who can drive, pass, and shoot effectively. Player development is one of the Heat’s strong suits.
