Winning one NBA championship is difficult. There are a number of NBA teams that have never won a title. This list includes the Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Pelicans, and the Oklahoma City Thunder (if one considers them separate from the Seattle Supersonics). However, repeating as NBA champions is even more difficult. There are many challenges of repeating as NBA champions.

Some of these challenges are a decreased level of motivation, key players leaving, injuries, and new teams rising to challenge the previous champions. One of the reasons why the Magic-Bird rivalry was so compelling is that neither the Lakers nor the Celtics dominated. They both won against each other. Without further ado, let’s dive into the difficulties teams face when trying to repeat as NBA champions.

The Challenges of Repeating as NBA Champions | Less Motivation

The ultimate goal of every NBA team is to win the championship. Some teams, like the Celtics and Lakers, have won quite a few NBA championships. Other teams have only won a few championships, like the Heat and Spurs. Some teams have never won the championship, as previously discussed.

There is always plenty of motivation when a team is seeking to win another, or its first, NBA title. Reaching that point is so difficult, but it is so rewarding when it finally happens. It is usually a difficult journey and involves plenty of ups and downs. However, it is more difficult to maintain that level of motivation after winning an NBA championship.

After all, the team has already achieved its ultimate goal. Repeating as NBA champions is often not as enticing as winning the title in the first place. This is part of why so few teams have repeated as NBA champions. It is a struggle to ensure that the team is as motivated to repeat as it was to win the title initially.

Injuries Also Play a Role

Teams and fans often don’t want to admit this, but luck is part of winning an NBA championship. Season after season, the team that wins the NBA title is the team that had the best injury luck. In the 2023-24 season, the Celtics had exceptional injury luck, with no key players missing much time. In contrast, nearly every team they faced in the 2024 playoffs dealt with an injury to at least one key player.

This is another challenge that a team faces when seeking to repeat as NBA champions. Good injury luck tends not to last over multiple seasons and even teams with quality depth may struggle when key players miss time. Injuries can also be unpredictable. Some players are more injury-prone than others.

However, this doesn’t mean that players who aren’t injury-prone can’t get hurt. Sometimes, this can happen due to a freak accident or a seemingly random non-contact injury. As a result, injuries can prevent a team from repeating as NBA champions. This contributed to the Celtics not repeating as NBA champions in the 2008-09 season.

Challenges of Repeating as NBA Champions | Key Players Might Leave

It is understandable if you might expect a team that just won the NBA championship to retain all of its key players. This does happen sometimes. However, it is fairly common for key players to leave championship teams in the following offseason.

This may be due to a number of factors. The key player might want a bigger role that their current team can’t offer them. They might want a new contract that their current team cannot or will not give them. Additionally, the key player might simply want to seek a new challenge on a new team and want to help that team win a title.

Whatever the reason, losing key players hurts a team’s ability to repeat as NBA champions. This is part of the reason why teams often fail to repeat as NBA champions. It is important to note that ‘key players’ doesn’t only refer to a team’s best, second-best, or third-best player. In this context, key players is a term that refers to any player that contribute noticeably to a team winning the title in the first place.

The Nuggets experienced this in the 2023 offseason. Key role players like Bruce Brown left the team and this hurt the Nuggets’ hopes of consecutive titles. There is even a commemorative bobblehead of Bruce Brown, further illustrating his importance. The Nuggets failed to repeat as champions, losing in the second round of the 2024 playoffs.

New Teams Emerge as Contenders

One more difficulty that a team faces when attempting to repeat as NBA champions is the rise of new contenders. At least one new contender tends to emerge every season and they seek to dethrone the current champions. Perhaps the new contender makes a big trade or free agency signing.

Maybe one of their players develops into a superstar. In any case, the rise of new contenders is a hurdle that any team seeking to repeat as NBA champions must overcome. The 2024-25 NBA season has produced several new contenders in both the Eastern and Western Conferences.

In the East, the new contender is the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavaliers have already beaten the defending champion Celtics this season and look to pose a significant challenge to the Celtics repeating as NBA champions. In the Western Conference, the Thunder have emerged as a serious contender, led by MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Time will tell if the Celtics can beat these new contenders and repeat as NBA champions. Regardless, this is part of the difficulty of winning back-to-back titles.

Fatigue Wears Down the Team

The NBA regular season is an 82-game marathon and this can be quite tiring by itself. When one adds in playoff games from the first round to the NBA Finals, the season is often over 100 games long. Naturally, NBA players are far more resilient than the average person.

However, NBA players are still human. Playing from October until June and trying to do so for a second consecutive season is extremely challenging. Fatigue sets in and this can prevent a team from repeating as NBA champions. Even NBA players have physical limitations.

Will the Celtics Overcome These Challenges?

We will see if the Celtics overcome these challenges and win back-to-back titles. The NBA’s recent history says they won’t. No team has won consecutive NBA championships since 2018. Time will tell whether or not the Celtics can buck this trend.
